4 Ways to Change Up Your Summer Workout Routine

Summer is a great time to get outdoors and exercise. There are plenty of activities just waiting for you to get it in gear, but simply running the same old trails you ran all fall and winter doesn't sound like a lot of fun. If you want to change up your summer workout routine, try out some of these great suggestions.

  1. Check Out the Local Fun Runs

During the warm months, many areas will have a host of fun runs that are plenty of incentive to lace up your running shoes and get active. Whether you love the idea of a mud run or a color run/walk is just your style, take a look at the great runs available in your area this summer. Make sure you sign up early: lots of runs offer cheaper tickets if you sign up well in advance of the deadline!

  1. Go Skiing

Wait, what? That's right: if you really want to do something different with your summer exercise routine, offer yourself a unique challenge and head out for a skiing adventure. Australia and New Zealand offer some excellent skiing opportunities that are perfect for taking a break from the summer heat. Take your workout routine to new heights! It's critical to be sure that you properly size your ski poles before you go, however. Ski pole sizing ensures that you will be able to enjoy your new workout strategy safely, lowering your risk of injury and making it even more fun. Skiing exercises are a great way to do something really unique with your workout in the middle of summer!

  1. Get in the Water

One of the hardest things about exercising during the summer months is the heat. Some days, you find yourself sweating before you even get started with your workout! Thankfully, there are some great water workouts that will allow you to enjoy the summer heat instead of dreading it. These can include:

  • Swimming laps
  • Water aerobics
  • Water walking or jogging
  • Pool planks

Water exercise has a number of benefits. Not only is it lower-impact, which makes it great for your joints or if you're dealing with an injury, it also increases your strength and flexibility while helping you torch calories with a highly efficient workout.

  1. Enjoy the Delights of the Mountains, Lakes, or Sand

What does the outdoors look like in your area? Whether you have soaring mountains, gorgeous lakes, or a nearby beach, there are plenty of options for summer exercise that will allow you to head into the great outdoors and take advantage of your local landscape.

  • Go for a hike through the mountains. A slow, steady pace is great for beginners, while a more experienced or athletic hiker might choose a more challenging route.
  • Test those arm muscles and get out on the water by going canoeing or kayaking.
  • Head out for a long run on the beach. This is particularly effective if you run in the powdery sand further from the water, since it gives your legs a more intense workout.
  • Join a climbing club and see what options are available in your area. Mountain climbing is a great way to get in some exercise and build your strength and endurance!

This summer, don't limit your workout routine to what you can accomplish in the gym. Instead, take advantage of the great summer weather to get outside and do more! Whether you're planning a big skiing trip to cool off for a few days in the middle of summer or heading for the mountains or the beach, there are plenty of exercise options to allow you to change up your workout routine.
